2022 The Landing Chardonnay

Tasting Notes

This wine offers a complex aroma of citrus, stonefruit, and spice characteristics. The palate has depth and intensity with mineral notes and a powerful finish with flavours of apricot and vanilla, balanced by a juicy acidity. A Chardonnay that shows richness alongside a tightly structured palate with layers of texture and pairs well with snapper, saffron, shellfish and other delicate flavours.

  • Vineyard & Winemaking

    Clones are grown across eight blocks from vines planted in 2007, 2014 and 2015. Partial leaf removal on eastern/southern side only, to allow afternoon shading. Hand-picked over several weeks based on fruit condition, ripeness, and flavour profile. Under-vine mowing during the growing season allows controlled competition for water and nutrients.

    Hand-picked, then hand sorted before whole-bunch pressing. Juice either goes direct to barrel or after overnight settling. Free-run juice and indigenous ferment. Approximately two-thirds of barrels are allowed to complete MLF. 45% new French oak in puncheon and barrique. 11 months in oak before blending to tank for 6 months further ageing. Crossflow filtered before bottling.

  • Vintage Notes

    A wetter than average early spring set up the vines with excellent canopies and good bunch weights. Summer and early Autumn was mostly dry and very warm although two events of strong winds and rainfall in early February delayed the ripening. The fruit showed excellent resilience to hang through and ripened well in great condition with fresh and vibrant flavours.

    Metro Wine Awards 2025 | Top 10 - If you want a talking point, this is it. The vines for this wine are grown at The Landing resort, located near the tip of the Purerua Peninsula at the northern end of the Bay of Islands. While the region is visually stunning, viticulture in these latitudes presents its challenges. The vineyard is managed with exceptional attention to detail. And the wine itself is a standout—featuring notes of creaming soda, roasted fennel, roasted artichoke heart, ripe pear, and hazelnut. The palate is lovely and rounded, with texture and impressive length.

    James Suckling | 94/100 | Top 100 - Plenty of apple, lemon and raw bread dough aromas and flavors, yet it remains reserved and polished. Flavorful and vivid, with hints of vanilla and apple tart in the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap. 

    Cameron Douglas | 93/100 - Excellent - A youthful primary bouquet of grapefruit and fresh yellow stone fruits, fresh cashew nut and mild toasty wood highlights, there’s a hint of tropical fruit then apple and a clay soil quality. Equally youthful as the wine touches the palate, taut textures from acidity, some fine tannins and influences from barrel. Dry with plenty of weight and style, a wine that still needs time to find its groove, I am confident it will with a best drinking window of 2025 through 2030.



    Robert Parker | RP 92/100 - The 2022 The Landing Chardonnay is funky and complex on the nose, with salted yellow peach, salted nuts, buttered popcorn, curry leaves and apricot Danish pastry. In the mouth, the wine has juicy acidity, but it’s a really weighty wine on the mid-palate. The vineyard is right on the coast, and the wine is salty and fresh; it has a breezy aspect. Voluminous. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Reviewed by Erin Larkin.
