Chardonnay 2019

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Vintage of The Landing Chardonnay has opened the window to just how great Northland Chardonnay from our site can be. This perfect growing season produced an austere, elegant and refined style. Attractive citrus and stone fruit aromatics sit perfectly with a hint of nutty-spice. On the palate, the wine has a full profile with more white stone fruit and spice. A racy stony minerality creates a lovely long finish with drying tannins that just beg for your glass to be filled again.

  • Vineyard & Winemaking

The Landing Chardonnay is made from hand-picked estate-grown fruit, which is whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques. After 11 months in oak, the wine is blended to tank to finish ageing.

Harvested from a mix of Chardonnay clones B95, 548, and UCD15 vines growing in the greywacke clay soils of the Purerua Peninsula, the 2019 vintage came from an outstanding growing season. The grapes for this Chardonnay were hand-picked between February 16 and March 8.

Delicious now, but also well worth cellaring, the 2019 vintage was estate-grown, hand-picked and fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (10 per cent new). Bright, light lemon/green, it is a very harmonious, fragrant, full-bodied wine, with generous, ripe stone-fruit flavours, slightly toasty and buttery notes, and very good vigour and complexity.

Estate-grown at a coastal site in the northern Bay of Islands, the very refined 2019 vintage was hand-picked and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques. Mouthfilling and tightly structured, it has vibrant, generous, well-ripened peach and grapefruit flavours, mealy and biscuity notes adding complexity, and a lasting finish. Still very youthful, it’s well worth cellaring to 2023+. 5 Stars

Michael Cooper

Taut, elegant Syrah with dark berry, wood-smoke, black pepper, dried herbs, charcuterie and spicy oak flavours. A silken-textured wine with a backbone of juicy acidity. Good now but should age well. 4 Stars
